Wedding Day Countdown: How to Prepare for Your Big Day
While you may have a running list of all the last minute things you need to complete before you walk down the aisle, and, no matter how well planned your wedding is, there are many elements that you may have accidentally overlooked. After some time of planning, you may see yourself as an expert when it comes to preparing for your special day. Even the most seasoned future brides and grooms can become nervous and flustered–particularly during the days leading up to the ceremony–causing some wedding day necessities to be neglected. Remember to maintain your composure during your wedding, and the days before, by following these tips.
Plan Out Your Wedding from Start to Finish
You may have planned on having a few rehearsals before your wedding day, but
creating a minute-by-minute s
c
h
edule
of your marriage ceremony and reception is the best way to ensure that your special day goes accordingly. Many wedding planners recommend
coming up with a list of tasks
, when each item should be completed, and, if you are really into details, how long each task should take. Keep stock of your wedding day accessories and party favors–especially those
rings from Blue
Nile
–
and include a list of who is in charge of which item. Make sure that this list is available to everyone involved in your wedding party and its planning.
Always be Prepared
Weddings are no different than any other event as they are full of mishaps and other complications and though you may think you’re equipped for everything imaginable, there may be certain problems you aren’t able to deal with as easily. As a result, many brides-to-be are preparing for the unexpected during their weddings by
devising their own wedding-day survival kits
full of basics such as safety pins, sewing materials, stain remover, tissues, and hair accessories. Remember to arrange for your maid of honor to collect these items in a bag that can be quickly accessed by everyone in your bridal party. Certain items, like wedding flowers, can be a major last-minute wedding day issue as they can be damaged or wilt in transit, particularly if they aren’t in season and are being imported from another region. Avoid a floral snafu by ordering your
floral arrangements online at M&S
instead of purchasing them from a florist who has to have them shipped in. Don’t forget to include a contact list of backups like drivers and shuttles or event entertainers in case those that you originally booked fail to come through.
Relax and Remember This is Your Day
Your wedding is one of those milestone occasions in your life, so preparing for it can be time consuming, stressful, and a bit intimidating. Thus, it’s very important that you do all you can to
the day before and on your wedding day. This may not be the easiest thing to do, but remember that your marital ceremony and reception are celebrations that should leave you full of joy, not overwhelmed and flustered. It’s highly recommended that you try to spend the day before you exchange vows indulging yourself and resting. Let your maid of honour or another member of your bridal party take charge and tend to any remaining duties while you pamper yourself or partake in simple activities that you had to put on hold during your wedding planning.
Stressless Wedding Gown Shopping
We have recently been asked by a brides visiting our shop how long should they allow for ordering the dress and accessories?’ We always respond with the same reply which is to allow at least 6 or 7 months at least before the wedding date for the dress and 2 or 3 for the accessories. If possible longer as you have to allow 4 to 6 weeks for fittings and also
unforeseen happenings like the dust storms of a few years ago. If you find you dress, wherever that may be, order it and stop looking. This is a big tick off the list for the bride and reduces the possibility of getting stressed at a later date.
So many brides today seem to think that you can walk into a bridal shop and choose a dress for immediate delivery!!! Some are actually flabbergasted when we tell them this is not possible a fact we blame on television programmes which show brides being miraculously able to walk in a shop, order bridal gown and 3 or 4 matching bridesmaid dresses in different sizes but the same colour and leave with them!!! Sorry but not in the real world of bridal! Dresses may not be made to measure but they are cut especially for every bride as she orders and so it is a timely process.
If it is possible order your dress a good 8 or 9 months before your wedding you can then relax and move on to choosing your accessories, head piece,
shoes and veil. These purchases can sometimes take as long as the actual dress itself to decide upon so give yourself plenty of time. Accessories however have a shorter lead time than the dress so as long as you leave 2 or three months you will be fine and able to enjoy the rest of your planning after all you could get married without flowers, cake. veil or even bridal shoes
but without the wedding dress and headpiece ……absolutely not!!
We hope this has been helpful and you are this sort of bride
and not this!
Happy wedding shopping!
Choosing The Right Tiara
Choosing The Right Tiara
When I set the date to get married I considered myself extremely lucky to be in such a fantastic position? I had just joined Annie Laurie and with as many as 10 top designers alongside me to offer help and advice, I assumed that choosing the centre piece of my outfit would be a breeze???
Every girl wants the fairytale wedding and no princess is complete without her crown. However, as I soon learned, no one princess is the same and not all head pieces will suit every princess. Regardless of what the latest ‘It’ girl is wearing, what bridal magazines tell you, what’s hot and what not; its important to rememberthat choosing your bridal accessories is all about you, your dress, your surroundings…….your fairytale.
Choosing your wedding outfit is a journey which we would recommend you set out on at least 12 months before your wedding day. Once you have found your dream dress, you can begin your search for accessoriesto complete your outfit.
The most valuable piece of advice we could give to any bride is listen to your heart. Don’t be swayed by others hopes and desires. This is your day and if you want to wear the crown jewels, then that’s what you must do. Plus, you don’t need an hour long consultation with someone else deciding what head-piece suits you best. All you need is time and variety allowing you to try on as many tiara’s, head bands, hair combs and many more accessories as possible from a number of different bridal studios, shops and internet based companies. We would also advise an open mind because the head-piece you desperately hate may be the one that flatters yourself and your outfit the most. Your journey ends when you make your purchase so be sure to go down every avenue before you make
your final choice.
Today’s bride can choose from an in expensive crown from a high street accessory shop or a bespoke head-dress designed to order. The bridal market is brimming with ideas from bling diamante studded tiara’s; circular bands to encircle a bun; a more delicate, flower based hair-band; romantic crowns adorned with stones or sequins; or a floral wreath.
Think of your wedding as a whole and make sure that all the elements complement each other. The starting point is normally your dress which will determine the style of head-piece and jewellery you require. It is worth considering that busy dresses with lots of bling look better without busy accessories. You don’t want to end up looking like a Christmas tree!!!! On the other hand, a plain dress can look fabulous with lots of added sparkle.
My dress was very plain with clusters of pearl, crystal and sequins. Therefore, I mirrored my tiara and accessories around this. In addition, I married in a 16th century monastery and so required a traditional style head-piece and jewellery to compliment my surroundings.
Your surroundings are another source of inspiration. Flower hair pins work well for beach weddings, as do feathers for winter weddings. A venue may suggest a historical theme requiring medieval style accessories.
The time of year also suggests certain colours and themes; blues and yellows in spring; fiery red, oranges and yellows in autumn; deep purples, red and even black in winter; sugared almond pastels – pale pink, blue, green, yellow, lilac during the summer months.
Before I set out on my search for the perfect head-pieces, I made a decision on how my bridesmaids and I would wear our hair. Items that suit hair up may not suit hair down so it is worthwhile thinking about this before you purchase your head-piece and find that at your hair practice your dream hairstyle looks ridiculous with your choice of head-dress. For my bridesmaids I wanted a sophisticated look as their dresses were so elegant and therefore, decided on sleek side buns with tiara’s. It very quickly became apparent that a tiara did not suit such a style nor head-bands. Instead I settled for flower hair combs placed on the side bun which added glamour and elegance and also a
uniqueness from the norm.
I choose to wear my hair up and made sure that whenever I was shopping for the perfect head-piece; my hair was tied back in a similar style to the one I would wear on my wedding day. When I finally made my choice I booked my pre wedding hair cut many weeks before the wedding day to ensure that the length would grow back and go up neatly as desired. It is worth consulting with your hairdresser the deadline for a trim because the last thing you want is not to be able to achieve the style you have set your heart on and that best suits your head-piece. Additionally, it is worth ensuring that your bridesmaids don’t have any intention of cutting their hair of a week before the wedding!
Today’s white dress does not necessarily have to be accompanied by white and silver, nor do ivory dresses require ivory and gold. Both colours sit equally well on white or ivory. It is personal choice.
As a base colour I chose silver, that is, the tiara was set on a silver band using silver wire to accommodate the Swarovski crystal and freshwater pearls. Therefore, my necklace and bracelet, although classed as a floating design on transparent thread, had a silver clasp matching my tiara. Even my matching pearl earrings had silver posts and butterfly backs and the colour of all pearls used were the same, ivory. Continuity is the key to a perfect wedding. I chose silver as this is the colour of jewellery I would always wear; plus, I chose iced mint for my bridesmaids andsilver was the perfect compliment to their dresses.
Comfort is a very important factor when choosing your head-piece and accessories. Tiara’s are available on a variety of different bases, some solid and some flexible. As a bride, you have enough to worry about and so require a head-piece you can forget is there from the moment it is placed on your head. Alternatively, you may prefer to wear hair crystals or curlies, hair pins or hair combs. Instead of a tiara or head-band there is also the option to wear a veil trim which, attached to the comb of the veil, looks identical to a tiara but is fixed to the veil as opposed to your hair.
My two younger bridesmaids wore head bands, much more comfortable for little princesses. When you go to the time, effort and expense of choosing the perfect head-piece for flower girls and younger bridesmaids, the last thing you want is for them to pull them out before the photos because they are hurting or rubbing. We would advise you to look out for bridal collections designed especially for little people, with all these factors in mind. As their hair was French pleated up the back and finished off in a side bun on top of the head, I chose to use crystal hair pins to decorate the pleat. A pain free but extremely effective accessory.
Veils are personal choice and today’s fashion magazines infrequently use veils when modelling bridal wear. A recent customer of Annie Laurie was in no way wearing a veil for this reason. Admittedly, I too strongly resisted the idea of a wearing a veil and insisted I would look like I was in fancy dress. Today, I look back and am so relieved that I changed my mind.
Veils don’t have to be worn traditionally. Nowadays many brides wear their veils lower down, hanging under their hair style and without wearing the blusher over their face. A veil is simply a finishing touch available in different lengths; made from fine materials such as chiffon and organza; and in a variety of detailing to match any dress including sparkly embroidery using beading, sequins and diamante. Curlies, hair combs, pins and hair crystals can be worn underneath the veil in wait for the evening reception when the veil is shed and yet another beautiful hair style is ‘unveiled.’
My journey ended on 25 th August 2006. I lived my fairytale and truly it was everything I could have wished for and more. I hope the advice given above helps you create your dream day. Everyone at Annie Laurie wishes you a magical journey and congratulat
ions for your wedding day.
Old Favourites New Trends
For a long time now the Swarovski encrusted tiaras and hair bands have been popular for both the bride and maids. Recently however we have seen a real revival of the floral headdress and had orders for single fabric flower hair combs with Swarovski stamens and floral circlets for the flowergirls with matching hairbands for the older bridesmaids
The single flowers hair clips are also gaining popularity again, roses, gerberas and lily of the valley being most popular are being worn at the side or back of the head, tucked into a pleat or a half up half down style. Flower wreath headheadbands or flower crowns are being chosen as a pretty alternative to the traditional veil or tiara.
The floral headdress first appeared in history during the time of the Greeks and it has changed little since then and it is as much in style
now as it was then.
Flowers carry symbolic meaning. For example, orange blossoms are an emblem of fruitfulness; baby’s breath stands for fertility and rosemary for remembrance. Greeks used ivy as a symbol for indissoluble love. Today wedding flowers still bring a message of fertility, enduring love and bounty. Yet modern brides choose flowers based on colour schemes or personal preference more often rather than the meaning behind the flowers.
Fabric hair flowers can be made in the same colour way as your wedding theme. Material cut from your bridesmaid’s dresses during alterations can be used and Swarovski crystal and semi-precious stones can be used to add a little sparkle to your day. Smaller maids can wear a scaled down version of adult flower combs but on an Alice band for ease of wear for smaller heads.
The pretty floral circlets are perfect for both adult bridesmaids and flower girls. Easy to wear they are usually flexible and so can be moulded to a specific head shape for a secure fit. Some are all flowers whilst others are on twig effect basis both are equally beautifully and give a real ethereal feel to any wedding.

Choosing Your Hair Accessories
Choosing Your Wedding Hair Accessories.
Hair is beautiful on its own, but the addition of a bridal tiara, side band or hair ornament can pull your whole look together and add that special sparkle to your wedding day.
First of all you should decide how you will be wearing your hair. If you are going for a completely new style it is advisable that you make the change a while before your wedding in order to make sure you are comfortable with the new look. Leaving this until the last minute you may find that you hate the new style but it is too late to do anything about it!!
When you chose your wedding gown you would have checked the look from every angle choose your hair accessories with the same care and attention. Make sure it looks stunning from every angle; taking into consideration the colour of your rings and making sure they all tone or match.
This rule should also be applied to necklace, bracelet and earrings.
If you gown has bead work hair pieces can be made to match this using the same Swarovski
crystals used on your dress. This ensures both tiara and dress complement each other and pull the whole look together.
Something to remember is that the placement of your hair accessory be it a tiara, comb or side band can change the look dramatically. A hairband can be placed flat on the head or at an angle like a tiara thus lifting it up and making it more obvious. Combs placed at the front of your hair are more visible than at the side or back, it all depends on the look you want to achieve.
